The battle to breathe

Joshua (18) and his sister Mia (15) were both born with Cystic Fibrosis.

It’s an “invisible disease”, a chronic life- threatening disorder that damaged the lungs and digestive system. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) causes thick mucus that clog organs: lungs, pancreas and intestines.

It causes malnutrition, poor growth, frequent respiratory infections, breathing problems and chronic lung disease with permanent damage.

This family not only face health challenges, they struggle covering medical expenses too. At times heavy doses of antibiotics are needed, more medication, nebulizer, physiotherapy, tests, x-rays, prodding and poking. It’s been a tough journey for these siblings: they have been so brave facing this big challenge from such a young age.

There is no cure for CF but there is recently an effective medication available called Trikafta. They need this medication life long to have more breaths and years added to their lives. The Olivier siblings need a second chance on living life to the fullest.

They need to start using Trikafta as soon as possible and recently moved over to Discovery medical aid. Once their waiting period is over, they will have access to Trikafta via the access programme.

We are asking for your support, prayers and assistance for this family’s financial burden. They have been raising money since Feb. 2024 and their target to afford medical aid is another R8700 pm. 

Together with friends and family they have raised more than R200 000 and this will be utilized to cover their medical expenses until their waiting period has lapsed. 

A small donation per month could make this sustainable, but a once off donation is also very helpful to ensure that they will be able to afford medical aid and have access to Trikafta. 

Cystic Fibrosis is a multi organ disease and they need proper medical aid to keep on breathing for longer.
